Chicago Cable Cars

The Chicago City Railway was a cable car system opened in Chicago in 1882. This system was reported to be the largest and most profitable cable car system in the world. Chicago's harsh Chicago climate was not a problem. The cable cars did not completely replace the horsecars. The system was in operation from 1882 until 1906,

One Chicago City Railway station survives at 5529 South Lake Park Avenue in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood. The former cable car station and waiting room currently serves as the home of the Hyde Park Historical Society. The cable cars were eventually replaced by electrical trolleys.

Class at Pierian Spring Academy

Chicago - Stormy, Husky, Brawling, City of the Big Shoulders

This course will be about Chicago. We will cover the history of the city and region, the politics, the corruption, the arts, the plans, and the achievements of the City. We will discuss current events.

Pierian Spring

In Greek mythology, the Pierian Spring of Macedonia was sacred to the Muses. As the metaphorical source of knowledge of art and science, it was popularized by a couplet in Alexander Pope's poem "An Essay on Criticism" (1709): "A little learning is a dang'rous thing;/Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring."
