Streetcars

  1. In the 1880 electric-powered "trolleys" first became practical. By the mid-1890s Chicago companies had begun the conversion to electricity, which was completed in 1906.

Companies providing trolley service included the Chicago Railways Company, Chicago City Railway, Calumet and South Chicago Railway, and Southern Street Railway. At this time Chicago had the largest street railway system, the longest one-fare ride, and the longest average ride in the world.

in June 1958, replacing them with

    and used the overhead lines
    used by the streetcars
